Should you convert JFIF to JPG?
Windows saved an image as .jfif and a form rejects it. It’s already a JPEG inside — we give it the right extension and a clean re-save.
Fine when you need JPG, but convert from the best copy you have. Both formats discard detail, so each round of JFIF to JPG to something else loses a little more; one conversion at a sensible quality is invisible.
JPG is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens everywhere, while JFIF is has patchy support.
JFIF is an ordinary JPEG photo that carries the .jfif extension; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. Use JPG for photographs you are sending, uploading or printing, especially when a form or app is fussy about formats.

What changes when JFIF becomes JPG
Two lossy formats in a row
Converting JFIF to JPG decodes the picture and compresses it again, so the JPG carries both rounds of loss. Keep the quality at 85 or above and the second round is invisible; lower settings make blocky or smeared areas show quickly.
The size stays about the same
JFIF and JPG are close in size for the same content, so do this for compatibility rather than to save space. JFIF: The same size as the equivalent JPG. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB.
This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of JFIF and JPG, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.
Why it doesn’t upload
Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- About the JFIF. People assume a .jfif file is a special format. It is a normal JPEG; the only real problem is forms that look at the extension and say no.
- About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
- DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
Questions
Is a JFIF file the same as a JPG?
Yes — JFIF is the file layout most JPEGs use, and .jfif is just a different extension. Many upload forms only check the extension, which is why they reject it.
Will converting JFIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.
Will the JPG be smaller than the JFIF?
The size stays about the same. JFIF and JPG are close in size for the same content, so do this for compatibility rather than to save space. JFIF: The same size as the equivalent JPG. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB.
